Intended to be both a plate for serving and a contemplative sculpture, this piece reminds us of the cracked earth after a drought. The earth has split in two and records the tension in the torn and eroded edges. This work reminds one that there is a history before the present. Something caused this. By taking our attention away from the function of the work, the artist is once again asking us how this came to be, and is it beautiful?
